When quietly keeping the systems running becomes a service

I stayed late patching a system nobody thinks about, the kind of thing that just quietly holds everything else up. I used to see it as grunt work. Now I'm realizing that thousands of people got through their day because it kept running, and that starts to feel like a real kind of service.
