When senior engineering turns out to be mostly diplomacy

I can get three teams to agree on one technical direction now, which took me years to learn. But I became an engineer because I loved building things. Most of my week is spent in meetings smoothing egos and brokering agreements, and I'm good at it, and I'm tired of how much of senior engineering turned out to be diplomacy.
