All day long strangers scream at me for things I didn't do and can't fix, and I've learned to keep my voice level while it happens. The scary part is how easy it's become; the words just slide off now, and I feel almost nothing. After a whole career of this, I'm frightened by how numb I had to make myself just to get through the shift.
