My manager starts giving me feedback and I catch myself nodding, smiling, saying "no, this is really helpful." The whole time I'm watching her face to make sure she feels okay about telling me. By the time she's done I've been so busy proving I can take it well that I couldn't repeat a single thing she actually said.
More people experience this than they realize.
You work so hard at looking okay with feedback that you never actually hear it.
