My performance gets measured on numbers that depend on other people saying yes -- things I can't actually control. And to hit them, I spend all day telling hopeful people 'no,' or 'not this one,' or 'they went another way.' Being the bearer of that much disappointment, while my own targets breathe down my neck, is wearing me down.
