When the academic job you earned pays like an insult

I did everything they said would pay off -- the degrees, the years, the sacrifices. Now I've got the professor job, and it comes with no job security, a constant push to publish or get pushed out, and a paycheck that barely covers the life I put on hold. I look at what I gave up and wonder if the whole deal was a lie.
