When the caring that brought you here goes numb

I became a nurse because I actually cared about people, and I was good at it. Now a patient tells me they're scared and I just go through the motions, nodding, checking the box. There's a flat, empty space where the caring used to live, and it scares me that I can't feel it anymore.
