When the impact you were promised never arrives

I took this role because of what it was supposed to change out in the world, that was the whole pitch, and I believed it. Years in, that impact just never showed up. I'm good at the job, I do it well, and I've slowly had to admit that the thing I signed up to matter for doesn't actually seem to matter at all.
