When the patient work of teaching a child goes unseen

I can get almost any kid to read or to finally understand numbers, even the ones everyone else gave up on. It happens slow, one quiet breakthrough at a time, nobody watching. And it stings a little that this patient, careful work is so invisible, that the world never sees the moment a child's face lights up because a word finally made sense.
