When the work you build may never fly in your time

I've reached the very edge of what I trained all those years to do. But the projects crawl — timelines stretch out over decades, and I sometimes wonder if I'll still be around to see anything I helped build actually get off the ground. I gave my career to this, and the payoff keeps drifting further out.
