When you can tell a clear story but the subtle ones challenge you

I can put together a clear story on screen now, beginning to end. But when the piece needs layers, when two things have to be true at once and the meaning sits under the surface, I lose the thread. I watch other people's work do it and I can't figure out how they held it all together.
