I know how to dress for a client meeting. What I can't figure out is the reading underneath it: how buttoned-up this particular client expects me to be, how much the stakes call for. I showed up sharp for a room that turned out to be jeans and sneakers, and spent the whole meeting feeling like I'd misjudged everything.
