When you solve it neatly and it was the wrong problem

Someone drops a messy problem on my desk and I'm good at breaking it into pieces. But sometimes I chop it up neatly and only later realize I was solving the wrong thing. I spent a whole week on an answer, then found out the real question was something else. I can organize the mess; I just don't always aim at the right target first.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

You can break a problem down but sometimes aim at the wrong question first.
