When family weight loss celebrations create unintended harm

My whole family is obsessed with my brother's weight loss after his gastric surgery, constantly praising how he looks now in ways that feel like indirect criticism of how he looked before — and how I still look. We're all trying to be supportive but the constant focus on his transformation is making family gatherings feel awful for those of us who are still fat.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Well-intentioned celebration of one person's body changes is inadvertently reinforcing shame and exclusion for others in the same family system.
