When long-term friendships reach a point of questioning their current relevance and depth

My best friend since childhood and I are in our forties now and I'm realizing we've never questioned whether we actually like who we've each become, or if we're just staying close out of history and habit. We keep having surface conversations about our lives but avoiding the deeper question of whether we're still growing each other or just maintaining something that used to matter more than it does now.
