When long friendships outgrow their original form

My oldest friend and I have been through everything together, but lately I've realized that we've both changed in ways that mean our old dynamic doesn't work anymore — the roles we used to play for each other, the assumptions we made about who needed what. We're trying to figure out how to be friends as the people we actually are now instead of who we were when we met fifteen years ago.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Enduring relationships sometimes require conscious renegotiation as people evolve beyond their established patterns of connection.
