Our book club started because we wanted to engage with big ideas together, but it's become a social hour where nobody wants to say anything that might create tension. I love these people but I'm frustrated that we've collectively decided intellectual safety is more important than intellectual honesty.
More people experience this than they realize.
The desire to maintain social cohesion can unconsciously override the original purpose of thinking together.
