When mutual aid networks debate the relationship between service and advocacy

I'm part of a mutual aid network supporting detained immigrants' families, and some volunteers want to expand our political advocacy while others worry that taking public positions will jeopardize our ability to provide direct services. We're all working from the same values but we can't agree on how visible to be.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A network is struggling to define their role as they balance immediate material support with longer-term systemic change efforts.
