When writing groups disagree about how to frame their collective identity publicly

My creative writing group has been meeting for two years and we're all women, but when we started talking about potentially publishing an anthology together, it became clear that some of us have very different ideas about whether we want to be seen as 'women writers' or just 'writers' and what that means for how we present our work.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group that formed organically around shared identity is discovering that making that identity public creates tensions about representation and artistic autonomy.
