My faith community is doing a sermon series on social justice and when our pastor asked for input on addressing the death penalty, it revealed that our congregation has people whose family members were murder victims alongside people who've had loved ones on death row. We're all sitting in the same pews but we've never acknowledged this tension and now we have to figure out how to have this conversation without causing more pain.
More people experience this than they realize.
Sacred space becomes complicated when the congregation includes people on opposite sides of unimaginable trauma.
