When mixed-race couples handle identity questions differently in social situations

My partner and I are both mixed-race but from completely different backgrounds and when people ask 'what we are' at social events we handle it so differently that it's starting to create tension between us. They're comfortable with the whole explanation every time and I just want to exist without performing my identity, but we can't figure out how to navigate this as a couple.
