When research collaborators have identity-based differences in interpreting their work

My research partner and I are both academics of color working on a project about racial equity, but we come from different racial backgrounds and we're finding that we interpret some of our data completely differently. We haven't figured out how to navigate this intellectually without it feeling personal, and our collaboration is getting tense in ways that feel familiar but that we can't name directly.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Two people whose shared identity categories brought them together are discovering the complexity and difference within those categories, complicating both their intellectual work and their working relationship.
