How to navigate complicity when studying your own community within colonial academic structures

My research partner and I are both academics studying our own communities and we're realizing that even though we're trying to decolonize our methodology, we're still operating within university systems that extract knowledge from our people. We want to do work that serves our communities but we also need these degrees to survive, and we're both feeling complicit in ways that are hard to talk about.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Two people are caught between survival within existing systems and loyalty to communities those systems have historically exploited.
