How to maintain solidarity while competing for scarce opportunities

My research partner and I are both people of color in a predominantly white academic field, and we've been supporting each other through the isolation and microaggressions for years. But now we're competing for the same fellowship and I can feel us both pulling back from the vulnerability that made our partnership so essential, and I don't know how to navigate wanting the best for both of us when only one of us can win.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Two people who depend on each other for support must navigate how competition changes the terms of their mutual care.
