My research partner and I are both people of color in a predominantly white academic field, and we've been supporting each other through the isolation and microaggressions for years. But now we're competing for the same fellowship and I can feel us both pulling back from the vulnerability that made our partnership so essential, and I don't know how to navigate wanting the best for both of us when only one of us can win.
