When consensus decision-making becomes a barrier to action in activist groups

Our activist collective makes decisions by consensus but three of us do ninety percent of the actual work while others show up to block proposals they haven't thought through and I'm burning out trying to hold both the ideals and the reality. We're more committed to the process than the outcomes and it's paralyzing us.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group committed to democratic ideals is discovering that their process has become a substitute for effectiveness, creating burnout for some and disengagement for others.
