How reading groups can move beyond surface-level diversity to meaningful engagement

Our book club has been reading authors from different backgrounds all year, but when we discuss the books, the conversation keeps defaulting to the white members' perspectives and comfort level, and those of us who are people of color are getting exhausted by having to constantly educate rather than just discuss literature.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Cultural consumption without cultural competence often reproduces the very hierarchies that diverse content is meant to challenge.
