When book clubs become battlegrounds for unspoken political differences

Our book club started as a fun social thing but we've been reading more books about social justice and politics, and now every discussion becomes this charged conversation where people are clearly coming from very different political places but nobody wants to acknowledge it directly. We're all trying to be polite and 'respectful' but it means we can't actually discuss the books honestly, and I don't know if we should address the elephant in the room or just go back to lighter books.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group seeking intellectual connection discovers they've been avoiding the very conversations their shared reading demands.
