When white affinity groups struggle with the transition from learning to action

Our book club started as a way for white people in our liberal neighborhood to educate ourselves about racism, but after six months some members think we should start doing activism while others want to keep focusing on learning, and a few people have said we should invite people of color to join but others worry about tokenizing. The conversations are getting uncomfortable and people are starting to skip meetings.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group formed around shared identity and good intentions is discovering that good intentions don't resolve the fundamental tensions between comfort, growth, and accountability.
