How to navigate conflicting views on ego and authentic self in Buddhist groups

Our Buddhist study group is split on whether we should be working to dissolve the ego or strengthen our sense of authentic self through practice. Half the group talks about 'letting go of who we think we are' and the other half focuses on 'discovering our true nature' and we can't seem to bridge these interpretations.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A study group is discovering that their fundamental assumptions about identity and spiritual development are irreconcilably different.
