Our community center board is split on whether to add gender-neutral bathrooms because some longtime members are resistant and some newer families with trans kids are threatening to leave. We're supposed to be an inclusive space but we can't agree on what inclusion means when different parts of our community have conflicting comfort levels.
More people experience this than they realize.
A community trying to serve everyone is discovering that true inclusion sometimes requires changes that challenge existing members' comfort, forcing difficult decisions about whose needs take priority.
