When diaspora communities struggle with competing claims to authentic cultural leadership

Our community organization is led mostly by people who moved here from our home country and those of us who were born here feel like our perspectives get dismissed as not authentic enough, but we also know the homeland politics in ways that feel important for the work we're trying to do. We're stuck between respecting elder leadership and advocating for inclusion of our different but real lived experience.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group is navigating the complex hierarchies of authenticity that colonization creates, where different forms of cultural knowledge compete for legitimacy.
