Our employee resource group started as a safe space for people with shared identity, but we're realizing that each of us brings different aspects of that identity depending on what's happening at work, and sometimes those different versions conflict with each other. Like, my 'professional advocate' self wants to push back on company policies while my 'team player' self doesn't want to rock the boat, and I see others struggling with similar internal conflicts.
More people experience this than they realize.
Shared identity spaces in professional contexts can reveal the complex ways people navigate between different aspects of themselves, sometimes creating internal tension rather than external solidarity.
