Scenario

When spiritual spaces preach universality but reflect privilege

Our meditation group is supposed to be a sanctuary, but I'm one of the few people here who isn't white and middle-class, and the way everyone talks about 'letting go of attachments' feels disconnected from the reality of what I'm dealing with outside these walls. My friend who brought me here doesn't seem to notice the disconnect.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Universal spiritual teachings can feel alienating when they ignore the different material realities that participants navigate.
