Scenario

When long-term board members create an inner circle

Our nonprofit board has three people who've been here since the beginning and they make all the real decisions in side conversations before meetings and the rest of us just vote on what's already been decided. The newer members are starting to notice and some are talking about leaving but the founders act like everything is transparent.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Informal power structures are undermining stated democratic processes and people are choosing exit over confrontation.
