When nonprofit boards struggle with authentic community representation

Our nonprofit board is supposed to represent the community we serve, but the people with the most time and resources to volunteer are mostly wealthy white folks who don't live in the neighborhood. We know this is a problem but every solution we've tried just creates new barriers or doesn't change the fundamental dynamic.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Structural inequalities reproduce themselves in volunteer leadership, making genuine community control nearly impossible despite good intentions.
