When family screen boundaries feel performative rather than meaningful

My family agreed to put phones in a basket during meals but my teenager says it's performative since we all just check them right after and honestly they're not wrong. We're going through the motions of being present but I can feel all of us mentally still scrolling and I don't know how to make this feel real instead of forced.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A family discovers that physical absence of devices doesn't automatically create presence of attention.
