Our friend group started doing annual 'memento mori retreats' where we reflect on mortality and set intentions, but it's become this competitive thing where people perform their death awareness and judge others for being too attached to material things. The original spirit of honest reckoning with impermanence has been lost and we don't know how to get it back.
More people experience this than they realize.
Collective death awareness has devolved into performance and judgment rather than genuine contemplation.
