When creative partners avoid necessary artistic conflict

My collaborator and I are working on an installation together and we both have strong opinions about materials and space, but we've never actually argued about anything, which I think is becoming the problem. We keep deferring to each other in ways that feel generous but are actually making the work timid, and neither of us knows how to start having the creative conflicts we probably need to be having.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Two artists are discovering that their mutual respect and conflict avoidance are preventing the productive creative friction their work requires to achieve its full potential.
