My poetry partner and I decided to write a chapbook together by alternating poems but we keep writing responses to each other instead of letting the other person's work stand alone and the whole thing is becoming one long argument disguised as art and neither of us knows how to step back without abandoning the project.
More people experience this than they realize.
The impulse to respond and build can overwhelm the discipline to listen and complement.
