When creative teams lose their edge by avoiding aesthetic conflict

Our design team has three people with three completely different aesthetics and for the first year that tension created really innovative work, but now we've started defaulting to the safe middle ground that no one loves. We're afraid to push in any direction because it might exclude someone else's sensibility, so everything feels watered down.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The fear of creative conflict has replaced the productive tension that originally generated the team's distinctive work.
