When creative democracies develop informal hierarchies

Our theater company has been devising work collaboratively for years, but our director friend has started taking more control during the creative process and some of us feel like the democracy we loved about this group is shifting into something more hierarchical. Nobody wants to hurt feelings or seem like they don't trust her artistic judgment, but the whole reason we started this group was to make art as equals.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Collaborative groups can drift toward hierarchy so gradually that addressing it requires acknowledging a fundamental change in how creative power has been redistributed.
