When family fitness goals create unhealthy competition instead of support

My teenage daughter and I started working out together as a way to spend time and get healthier but it's become this weird competition where she pushes herself too hard to keep up with me and I find myself either holding back so she doesn't feel bad or secretly pleased when I'm stronger. We both want to stick with exercise but the dynamic between us is making it unhealthy for both of us.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A shared commitment to physical health becomes entangled with unacknowledged power dynamics and comparative thinking that undermines the original intention.
