Scenario

When your child's musical progress outpaces yours and creates family tension

My teenage daughter is way more advanced than me on guitar now after just two years of lessons, and I'm proud but also weirdly competitive and sometimes resentful that she's surpassing what took me decades to learn. When we try to play together I find myself either dumbing down my parts or getting defensive about my playing, and I can tell she's holding back so she doesn't make me feel bad.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A parent is grappling with how their ego around musical achievement is affecting their relationship with their child's natural development.
