When your discussion group becomes performative instead of authentic

Our book club started as five friends wanting to go deeper than surface-level conversations and we've been meeting for over a year now but lately every discussion feels performative — like we're all trying to say the right thing instead of what we actually think. I'm not sure if bringing this up will make it better or kill the whole thing.

What we've seen
