When friend groups struggle with authentic conversation

Our friend group started a monthly dinner where we'd talk about deeper things than just work and kids, but it's turned into everyone just venting their problems and nobody really listening. We all wanted meaningful connection but what we created feels more like group therapy without a therapist, and I don't know if we should change the format or just admit this isn't working.
