How to navigate cultural dynamics in traditional ecological learning groups

Our permaculture study group started because we all wanted to learn indigenous growing methods, but three of us are from the communities whose knowledge we're studying and four of us aren't, and the power dynamics are getting weird. Some people are treating this like academic research while others of us are trying to reconnect with practices our families lost, and we don't know how to bridge that gap.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A learning community is grappling with the complex intersection of cultural identity, ownership, and access when engaging traditional ecological knowledge.
