Scenario

When successful mentorship creates ongoing confusion about changed roles

My former student became a colleague and now she's one of the best teachers in our department, but she still defers to me in meetings and asks permission for things she doesn't need permission for — and I think my attempts to encourage her independence are coming across as rejection. We both seem stuck in old roles that don't fit anymore.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The success of mentorship can create its own problem when both people struggle to recognize and inhabit the new relationship.
