When social groups struggle with political tension and member loss

Our book club has been meeting for five years and we've become real friends but lately the discussions have gotten really intense about social issues and a couple people have stopped coming. The rest of us keep acting like everything is fine but I can feel the group fracturing and I don't know if we should address it directly or just let it evolve naturally.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group formed around shared interest is discovering that intellectual intimacy can create emotional risks they weren't prepared to navigate.
