When social groups drift from their original purpose and no one addresses it

Our book club has been together for five years and started as intellectual discussion but has become more like therapy where one or two people dominate every meeting with their personal problems, and the rest of us don't know how to redirect it back without seeming heartless or exclusive.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Groups can slowly transform into something none of the members actually want, but the intimacy that develops makes it feel impossible to return to boundaries that might hurt people who now depend on what it's become.
