When friend groups outgrow their original purpose

Our book club started as a way for a group of us to stay connected after college but over the years it's become clear that some people just want to socialize while others actually want to discuss books seriously, and we keep having meetings where everyone is slightly annoyed. We've been friends for so long that nobody wants to rock the boat but the current format isn't really serving anyone.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group is maintaining a form that no longer matches anyone's actual desires because they're afraid that changing structure will change relationships.
